Liberal Nationals’ ‘Super Highway’ to get Ivanhoe moving again

A Liberal Nationals Government will build an East West Link AND a North East Link to unclog traffic congestion in the Ivanhoe area.

Everyone in the Ivanhoe community is frustrated by local traffic congestion which makes our roads dangerous for all road users as well as causes delays and frustrations which means we have less time to spend with family and friends.

Traffic congestion costs the Victorian economy a staggering $5.54 billion a year.

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will design an East West Link and a North East Link in tandem with construction expected to commence in 2020-21 following final determination of the route in consultation with the Office of Projects Victoria.

A Liberal Nationals Government will continue with the development of a North East Link consistent with the current timeline but including an immediate review to change elements of the design, including tunnel portal location and property acquisitions.

It is expected that an East West Link and a North East Link will be fully completed by around 2026 and 2027 respectively.

Only the Liberal Nationals will remove traffic lights and roundabouts through grade separations at 55 of Melbourne and Geelong’s busiest, most congested intersections.

Only the Liberal Nationals have a comprehensive congestion-busting plan for Melbourne’s highways and arterial roads.

The Liberal Nationals have already announced at least one local traffic light intersection removal by grade separation at Banksia Street and Lower Heidelberg Road. We are also working with the local community on finding a solution to improve congestion on Rosanna Road.

Only the Liberal Nationals will deliver around 19,000 jobs in the construction of an East West Link, a North East Link and the removal of 55 busy and dangerous intersections.

Daniel Andrews wants to build his North East Link without fixing the Eastern Freeway. That will put an extra 100,000 cars a day on the Eastern Freeway which is already gridlocked most of the day.

“A Liberal Nationals Government will build a better designed North East Link as well as an East West Link to unclog local traffic congestion and get Victoria moving.

Daniel Andrews and Labor’s design for their North East Link requires a number of improvements.

This is a once in a century opportunity to build a North East Link and fix local congestion so we need to get it 100% right.

That’s why an elected Liberal Nationals Government will continue with the development of a North East Link consistent with the current timeline but including an immediate review to change elements of the design, including tunnel portal location and property acquisitions.

It is intended that private property, business and educational land acquisitions for this project will be reduced through design changes and private, community and industrial land be saved through tunnel portal redesigns.

Melbourne is jam-packed and about to hit the 5 million mark. Melbourne cannot continue growing at this pace until our roads, transport and services infrastructure catches up.

We can’t keep playing this game of infrastructure catch-up and we have to start getting ahead.

Daniel Andrews only wants to build his poorly designed North East Link without fixing the Eastern Freeway. But only building his North East Link will put an extra 100,000 more cars on to the Eastern Freeway which is already gridlocked almost 24 hours a day.

Unlike Daniel Andrews and Labor, we will not introduce or increase tolls on any existing roads, including the Eastern Freeway, to fund the construction of this Super Highway.”

“Building a North East Link and fixing the congestion on the Eastern Freeway by building an East West Link is the silver bullet for fixing local congestion.

On top of that, a Liberal Nationals Government will remove the traffic light intersection through grade separations at Banksia Street and Lower Heidelberg Road.

I am also working with Matthew Guy’s team and the local community on finding a solution to improve congestion on Rosanna Road.

My focus is on fixing local arterial roads and getting the design of a North East Link right.

If Daniel Andrews and Labor build and get the design of their North East Link wrong, we can’t undo the construction and start over again.

We will only get one chance to get the design of the North East Link and an East West Link right and given Labor’s track record on Myki and the desalination plant, I don’t trust them to get their North East Link right.”
